STATEMENT ON SEISMIC TESTING

Monday, 18 November 2024
  • Seismic testing critical to offshore surveying and oil and gas industry.
  • Getting new gas supply online will drive down energy prices and avert looming shortfalls.
  • Offshore carbon capture developments require seismic to unlock new emissions reduction projects.

With gas prices skyrocketing by 33.9 per cent under Labor, the Coalition remains strong supporters of the gas industry and will oppose any attempts to stymie gas production – including today’s introduction of a Teal bill to ban seismic testing.

Gas is and will remain a crucial part of our energy mix, and the energy needs of our strategic international partners. The Coalition remains committed to the ongoing use of gas in our energy system, and the ongoing need for seismic testing in offshore exploration.

In the middle of a gas crisis, the Albanese Labor Government – in partnership with the Teals and Greens – is attempting to stop the use of seismic testing, which threatens the continued development of much-needed gas supplies for Victoria and the southern States.

Shadow Minister for Resources, Senator McDonald, said that as part of lowering global emissions, seismic testing will remain crucial in the development of offshore carbon capture and storage, which will help lower the emissions of Australia and our international partners.

It is hypocritical that southern politicians regularly call to halt developing our energy resources – critical to the energy needs of Australia and our international partners – whilst remaining overwhelmingly reliant on energy exports from Queensland and New South Wales.

Australia’s gas industry has provided energy for the world for decades, and will continue to do so under a Coalition Government.
