SUPPORT FOR THOSE IMPACTED BY MINE TRAGEDY

I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident at BMA’s Peak Downs mine this morning, which has claimed the life of one worker and left another seriously injured.

My heartfelt condolences are with the family, friends and workmates of the man who has lost his life, and my thoughts are also with the injured worker as he recovers. I also acknowledge the emergency services and mine rescue personnel who responded to this terrible incident.

Queensland’s resources industry is powered by hardworking men and women who take on demanding and dangerous jobs to provide for their families and help drive our state’s and nation’s economy. Every one of them deserves to return home safely at the end of every shift to the people they love.

Organisations such as Miners Promise remind us that when tragedy strikes, the mining community rallies around those left behind. Their work supporting families through unimaginable loss is invaluable, and I know it and many people across the resources sector will be reaching out to support those affected in the difficult days and weeks ahead.

As authorities begin their investigation, it is important that the process be allowed to run its course so the circumstances of this tragedy can be fully understood and any lessons identified.

Today, our focus should be on supporting those affected, standing with the mining community, and honouring the worker who has lost his life.
